As it seeks to gather and report news it believes to be helpful to its readership, The Crow’s Nest is guided by the ethics standards set forth by the Society for Professional Journalists Code of Ethics and the principles listed by the American Society for Newspaper Editors and follows the CN Style Guide. We promise the following:
  • The news content must be accurate, free from biased presentation and in context so that all relevant sides are presented fairly. Editorials should be held to the same standards of accuracy as news reports with respect to the facts.
  • The reader must be able to distinguish between news reports and opinion. Articles that contain opinion or analysis should be clearly identified.
  • Avoid news photos that misrepresent a story, deceive the public or alter reality.
  • Avoid using anonymous sources unless the news value warrants and the information could not be obtained any other way.
  • Always question a source’s request for anonymity and provide as much information as possible in the article to characterize the source.
  • Strive for multiple sources to test the accuracy of the information that has been gathered and to explore other points of view.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
